My Life as a Courgette

My Life as a Courgette

CATALOGUE TEXT
Little Icare’s mother curses happiness as a lie. After her sudden death the only memories to warm the boy’s heart are a paper kite and his unusual pet name, “Courgette”. He’s slow to settle in at the children’s home. But then confident Camille arrives, conquers his heart and drives the greyness away. Alice, who usually hides behind her parting, would-be boss Simon and chubby Jujube are little personalities who, despite the scares inflicted by fate, can fool around like other kids and want to find out about the important questions in life. For example what happens to the body when we fall in love. But then danger looms for Camille …

In their adaptation of Gilles Paris’s “Autobiographie d’une courgette”, director Claude Barras and scriptwriter Céline Sciamma prefer quiet, emotional nuances to loud action. Nonetheless, childish mischief and fun are not neglected. The puppets act in a lavishly designed world whose bright colours and clarity compensate for the complications of life. The exceptional Swiss musician Sophie Hunger adds cheeky, magical and eccentric sound highlights to the images. Though life isn’t always easy for Courgette and his friends, Barras’s film always gives us the pleasant feeling that happiness exists, though it may sometimes be hidden.
